[Introduction] [Adaptation] [Examples] [Glossary]

IV. Glossary

Adaptation
A change affected on a work of literature. An Adapatation has two phases: (1) the Initiation Phase, which causes the Adaptation to occur, and (2) the Execution Phase, which concludes the Adaptation by changing the work in some way. Adaptations can be broken up into two forms: Structural Adaptations and Content Adaptations.

Author
Anyone primarily writing a work of literature.

Confidence Rating
A value associated with a Section of a work that expresses how well-liked (and hence, possibly, how well-written) a particuliar section of a work is. Confidence Ratings are used as an Initiation to trigger Adaptations to a work.

Content Adaptation
An Adaptation which affects the content of a work, that is, the actual wording of the Sections inside the work, as well as in some cases, whether those sentences exist or not. An Adaptation affecting the order of these Sections, or the structure of the work as a whole is called a Structural Adaptation.

Execution Phase
The phase of an Adaptation that performs the change on the work of literature. This phase can be executed by a reader, an author or by some form of rule-based system. It follows the Initiation Phase during an Adaptation and is the phase that determines exactly how the work of literature will be modified for the Adaptation.

Initiation Phase
The phase of an Adaptation that causes the Adaptation to occur. This is the cause of the Adaptation. It can either be reader or author initiated. The Initiation Phase determines what events cause an Adaptation on a work of literature to occur. The Execution Phase which follows it determines what the actual change to the work will be for the Adaptation.

Reader
Anyone primarily reading a work of literature.

Section
A word, verse, sentence, paragraph, section or chapter of a work of literature that is considered a whole individual part. A work is broken down into Sections for many different forms of adaptation that modify and rearrange the various sections of a work. This is most needed when assigning Confidence Ratings to various Sections of a work.

Structural Adaptation
An Adaptation which affects the structure of the work, that is, how the various Sections of a work are laid out in relation to one another. This can in some cases also involve whether or not a Section exists, although this is usually delegated to Content Adaptations which affect the actual wording of each Section.
