The Earth Book
CHI NO MAKI
- "The teacher is the needle and the disciple is the thread." The
master, or teacher, guides the student's personal understanding of
whatever is being done, with enlightenment as the ultimate goal. The
student is part of the resulting awareness. The master is not.
- From one thing know ten thousand things: Being adept (in the sense
of kü) at anything give you the opportunity to take what one
knows and apply it to other things.
- The virtue of the long sword (tachi): The virtues of the bushi;
the code of honour and loyalty, benevolence and humility,
represented by the sword.
- Harmony amonst all things is achieved by rememebering context
and responding appropriately within that context.
On the Five Chapters of This Book on Heihö
- The five chapters: CHI (earth/land), MIZU (water), HI (fire),
KAZE (wind), and KÜ (emptiness).
- The spirit of water: Water alters its shape according to the
shape of its container, be it square or round, and it can be a drop
or an ocean.
- The spirit of fire: Fires can be large or small and change suddenly
and drastically.
- "Unless one knows well about others, it is not possible to know
oneself." Wind chapter discusses other schools.
- The many rhythms in Heihö. In life. Study them.
Epilogue
- To undertake the Heihö, be aware of the following:
- Do not harbour sinister designs.
- Diligently pursue the path of the Niten Ichiryü.
- Cultivate a wide range of interests in the arts.
- Be knowledgeable in a variety of occupations.
- Be discreet regarding one's commercial dealings.
- Nurture the ability to perceive the truth in all matters.
- Perceive that which cannot be seen with the eye.
- Do not be negligent, even in trifling matters.
- Do not engage in useless activity.
