Making the Border Fade to White

Use this technique to create a different look for images you might normally use a drop shadow on. I particuliarly like it on photographs.

  • Select the entire image by hitting Shift-A or selecting Selections | Select All.

  • Apply a cutout effect by selecting Image | Special Effects | Cutout... without filling the interior with colour. Use a Shadow Color of White (or whatever colour you want to fade to), an Opacity of 255 and a Blur of 5. Use a Vertical Offset of 5 and a Horizontal Offset of 5.

  • Apply the cutout effect again, but this time change your Vertical Offset to -5 and your Horizontal Offset to -5.

  • Changing your vertical and horizontal offsets change how deep into the picture the fade will go and the blur will determine how quickly it will fade from the picture to the shadow colour. If you want to fade to a different colour, change the shadow colour.
